The “Pumpkins United” configuration of German power metallers Helloween, featuring Andi Deris, Michael Kiske, Kai Hansen, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Grosskopf, and Dani Löble, are releasing their second album (the band’s 17th studio album) in celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary.
The seamless interplay between the three vocalists stands out from the dramatic opening track “Giants on the Run” onwards. Fans of different eras of the band should find something to enjoy, for example, the fast-paced “Savior of the World” is reminiscent of the Keeper era and “Under The Moonlight” contains vibes of older classics like “Rise And Fall”. “A Little Is A Little Too Much” has an 80s melodic rock vibe although it is one of the weaker tracks, and “We Can Be Gods” is an outright head-banger. “Into The Sun” is a ballad which was written for the 2021 album but later scrapped, and the vocal layering of Kiske and Deris is particularly enjoyable on this track.
“This is Tokyo” is the first track released from the album, yet is not a highlight and a strange choice as a single. The repetitive declarations of “Tokyo” are hard on the ear. Quality is restored with the following track, “Universe (Gravity For Hearts)”, which features an exciting guitar solo, and then the stand out track of the album, “Hand Of God”, with its gripping lead melody and heavy chorus. It would have made a great single release. Those who appreciate Helloween for grand arrangements and multi-vocal climaxes will enjoy the 8 minute closer “Majestic”, with its Iron Maidenesque verses. “Pumpkins United” sound more cohesive than on the self-titled 2021 album, which sounded like different styles clashing. It contains the classic speed-metal riffs, twin-guitar harmonies, soaring choruses and crisp and punchy production you would expect from Helloween.
