Kicking off with the excellent title track, which starts slowly and relatively quietly before the riff thunders in and drives the song along relentlessly, this is 26+ minutes of quality rock. Once again, the band consists of Chris Robertson (lead vocals, guitar), Ben Wells (guitar, backing vocals) John Fred Young (drums, backing vocals ) and Steve Jewell Jr. ( bass, backing vocals), but this time there is also a guest vocal peformance by Tyler Connolly, lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Theory of a Deadman.
Perhaps surprisingly, Connolly features on a really effective cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” which, less surprisingly, ramps up the riffs and guitar and closes out the album in style. Not an obvious choice of cover, but very welcome!
Elsewhere, “I’m Fine” provides a little light with the shade but is no less powerful for that and showcases yet another of those big choruses that the band always sprinkle across each album. Throughout the band performs, as ever, as a cohesive unit that is tighter than a Scot’s wallet, and every song earns its place here.
Black Stone Cherry are huge in the UK but less popular in the rest of Europe, so perhaps this latest set of songs will change that – and it is really time that it should!
